Website or social media? Why your business needs both

"I've already got Instagram, that's enough." Not quite. Here's why a social account can't replace a website — and how the two work together for your business.

Plenty of business owners think the same thing: “I’ve got an active Instagram, customers follow me, I post regularly. Why bother with a website on top of that?” It’s a fair question. Social media works — it brings people in, it builds a connection, it keeps you visible. But it doesn’t do the same job as a website. And treating the two as interchangeable means building your presence on ground you don’t own.

On social, you own nothing

Your Instagram or Facebook account isn’t yours. The platform makes the rules. A change to the algorithm, a false report, a suspended account — and overnight you lose access to your audience and years of posts. It happens, regularly, to honest businesses that did nothing wrong.

A website is the opposite. It’s your address, your domain name, your content. Nobody can shut it down on a whim. You hold the key.

The algorithm decides who sees you

When you post on social, not all of your followers see it. The platform chooses who, when, and how many. You can have hundreds of followers and only reach a small slice of them with any given post.

Your website answers to no social algorithm. Someone types in your address and they land on you — every time, in full.

People don’t find you on Google through a social account

This is the most underrated point of all. When a customer searches “plumber + your town” or “restaurant near me” on Google, they don’t land on your Instagram profile. They land on websites. A social account, however polished, almost never shows up at the top of search results.

And that’s exactly where real discovery happens: the people who don’t know you yet, searching for precisely what you offer.

The two don’t compete — they reinforce each other

The right way to think about it isn’t “website OR social.” It’s “website AND social,” each doing its part:

  • Social brings people in. It creates the pull, shows the day-to-day, keeps the connection warm with the people already following you.
  • The website converts. That’s where they find your opening hours, your prices, your menu, a button to book or call. It’s the serious page that reassures.
  • Google brings the newcomers. People who don’t follow you yet find you through search, land on your site, then start following you on social.

Each channel feeds the others. Your website link in your Instagram bio. Photos from your site shared to a story. The loop keeps turning — but it needs a stable centre. That centre is the website.

The foundation is what you own

Social accounts are like renting: powerful, useful, but dependent on a landlord. A website is the house you own. You build the house first, then you invite people over.

At Ultras-Sites, that’s exactly what we build: the foundation you genuinely own — a website that’s fast, findable on Google, and connected to both your social channels and your customers. Your accounts keep doing their job; the site gives them a solid anchor.
