Website speed: what it wins you (and what it quietly costs)

A slow website loses customers before the first image even loads. Here's why speed decides your sales and your Google ranking — and what a genuinely fast site changes.

When a customer opens your website on their phone, they decide in a handful of seconds whether to stay or leave. They aren’t judging your work — they’re judging how fast the page appears. And on that single point, most business websites lose customers without ever knowing it.

Every second of waiting costs you customers

Google’s research has been consistent for years: the longer a page takes to load, the more visitors abandon it. Past roughly three seconds on mobile, a large share of people are already gone — often to a competitor whose site opened faster.

The trap is that you never see the customers you lose. They don’t call to say “your site was too slow.” They close the tab, in silence. A fast site goes unnoticed; a slow one drives people away — quietly, continuously.

Google looks at the mobile version first — and at speed

Google crawls and ranks sites based on their mobile version, and speed is one of the signals it measures (the Core Web Vitals: loading speed, visual stability, responsiveness). Two businesses with equivalent content are not ranked the same if one loads in a second and the other in five.

So speed works twice for you:

  • before the visit, by helping your site surface higher in search;
  • during the visit, by keeping the customer instead of losing them.

Why so many sites are slow

Slowness is almost never unavoidable — it’s a lack of technical care. The usual culprits:

  • huge images sent at full size and resized by the browser;
  • themes and plugins stacking dozens of needless scripts;
  • external fonts and widgets that block rendering;
  • a generic build designed to be quick to produce, not quick to load.

It all holds up on a brand-new phone with a strong connection. But real life is a more modest phone, an average signal, a mountain village or a basement — and that’s where the site falls apart.

What a genuinely fast site changes

  • More visitors who stay: the page appears instantly, nobody gives up in the waiting room.
  • More conversions: every second saved and every step removed turns more calls, bookings and quotes into results.
  • A better spot on Google: speed is a signal that works in your favour, in every language and country where you’re visible.
  • A serious image: an instant site inspires trust; a sluggish one feels like a neglected business.

Our stance: speed first, measured by Google

At Ultras-Sites, performance isn’t an option switched on at the end — it’s a build rule: optimised images served at the right size, lean code, nothing needless blocking the display, smooth even on modest phones. Our sites are built to aim for the top of Google’s scores (speed, SEO, accessibility) — and those scores are verifiable live, not promised on trust.

From London to Lisbon, Madrid to Geneva or Lyon, the customer’s reflex is the same: if it doesn’t open right away, they leave. A fast site simply means customers who stay.
