Restaurant app: is it a real tool or a costly gimmick

Do you need an 'app' for your restaurant? Usually no — but a website that behaves like an app, yes. The difference, and why it saves you money.

Someone may have pitched you an “app” for your restaurant. Before you sign, an honest word: in the vast majority of cases, a true app to download from the stores is a poor investment for a restaurant. But there’s something far better, and cheaper.

The problem with a true “app”

A native app (the kind you install from a store) means:

  • costly development, often twice over (one for each phone system);
  • the customer having to download it — and nobody installs an app for a restaurant they visit twice a year;
  • constant updates and maintenance.

The result: a lot of money for an app almost nobody installs.

The right answer: a website that behaves like an app

A modern website can now offer everything you’d expect from an app, with nothing to download:

  • it opens instantly from Google, a QR or a link;
  • it works perfectly on mobile, smooth, with bubble-and-screen navigation, like an app;
  • it lets people order, pay, book;
  • it can even be added to the phone’s home screen for regulars.

The customer gets the app experience. You don’t pay the price or the complexity.

What it changes for you

  • One tool instead of a website plus an app to maintain separately.
  • Findable on Google (an app is never indexed).
  • Up to date in one click: the menu, hours and photos change instantly.
