Google reviews for a local business: how to get more

Google reviews sort the businesses people choose from the ones they scroll past. How to look after your online reputation, get more reviews and turn happy customers into visible proof — a practical guide for owners of small local businesses.

When someone looks for a restaurant, a tradesperson or a shop near them, they don’t read your brochure. They look at your Google reviews. The stars, the number, what the last few customers said. That’s where the decision gets made — before they’ve even seen your front door.

Why reviews carry so much weight

A review is another customer’s word. Not yours. And that’s exactly why people trust it: the owner will always say the work is great; the neighbour who ate there last night is a different matter.

In practice, your Google reviews work on two fronts:

  • Getting found. Google pushes forward listings that are active, well-rated and have recent reviews. A living profile climbs in the local results and on the map.
  • Getting chosen. With the same star rating, the business with plenty of recent reviews earns more trust than one with three, dated two years ago.

Most people check the reviews before walking in or picking up the phone. It has become a reflex. A listing with no reviews, or only old ones, sends the wrong signal — even when your work is excellent.

The real problem: happy customers don’t think to leave a review

An unhappy customer writes without being asked. A satisfied one leaves happy… and forgets. The result: without a system, your reviews don’t reflect the reality of your work. You have few of them, and they land at random.

The answer isn’t to wait. It’s to ask, at the right moment, simply.

How to get more reviews, without pushing

A few principles that work for a local business:

  • Ask straight after a good moment: at the end of a meal that went well, when a finished job is handed over, at the till with a regular.
  • Make the gesture easy. Nobody is going to hunt down your listing by hand. A direct link, a QR code on the receipt or the business card, and the review takes thirty seconds.
  • Make it a real request. “If you were happy, a quick Google review helps us enormously” — said with a smile, it works.
  • Reply to every review, good and bad. A negative review handled calmly reassures people more than a page with no criticism at all.

Never buy or invent reviews: Google detects them, removes them, and it can penalise your listing. One fake review found costs you more than ten genuine ones missing.

The lever we put in place at Ultras-Sites

The link most businesses are missing is the bridge between a happy customer and a Google review. We build it into your site:

  • A clean reviews page, with your Google link, one click away from your site or a QR code.
  • The right path to move a satisfied customer naturally towards Google.
  • A Google Business profile linked to your site, consistent and up to date.

It’s a real mechanism, not a vague promise: you ask, the customer clicks, the review lands on Google. Repeated week after week, it changes your online reputation.
